During the first two months of 2026, 20 employers announced plans for mass layoffs — 2.5 times more than in the same period last year. The number of employees being laid off has tripled.
Employee Rights in Case of Mass Layoffs
Under Lithuanian labour law, mass layoff occurs when an employer dismisses a certain number of employees within 30 days (depending on company size). Employees have the following rights:
- Advance notice — the employer must notify employees at least 2 months before dismissal.
- Severance pay — depends on length of service and can be up to 6 monthly salaries.
- Consultation with employee representatives — the employer must consult with the trade union or works council.
- Priority to return — dismissed employees have priority to be rehired within 6 months.
Legal Assistance
If you are facing a mass layoff, we recommend seeking legal advice to ensure all your rights are protected.
